To my dear AD501 and all new generation for AD501

Time flies. How fast this semester is. Until now, I still remember the first class clearly – on Sep, 8, I first met the genial full beard professor -- Bruce Berman and 14 other lovely classmates from different countries. The harmonious class atmosphere and happy conversations really make me feel relax. To be honest, I like this class mostly among all my classes this semester. Although I don’t talk too much in the class, I really enjoy every minute with the professor and classmates.

First, I really appreciate my professor – Mr. Berman. Thank you for your great help and motivation with my English study. I know my English level was relatively weak at the beginning of this semester. I can’t claim that my English skills have improved greatly, but I can proudly say my enthusiasm to English study has increased quite a bit. Through the business communication, I have formed a habit of writing down new words and reviewing them time and again. Besides, in my experience at business communication, I developed and improved my writing, listening skills, assertiveness and the ability to communicate with Native Americans well enough to exceed prior expectations. In addition, there's something I have to say. It is very enjoyable to talk with you. I am impressed by your deep understanding and friendliness to China. Do you know how exciting I was when you said you had collected the Chairman Mao’s Red Book for more than 30 years? In fact, I worship Chairman Mao very much, either his modern military thought or his great foresight. If you come to China some time later, I will be glad to be your guide.

Besides, thanks all my classmates. You are the best classmates I have known in BU. Perhaps for the small class, we communicate with each other more frequently than other classes. Even from different programs, we are closer than the classmates in the same program. Don't forget to keep in touch with me all the time. It’s my pleasure to know you all. My email is hjh8855@yahoo.com.cn (msn).

To all new generation for AD 501, I’d like to say it is a helpful class. But just as a Chinese proverb says, no man is his craft’s master the first day. You need to do much practice after the master gives you the basic instructions. You must push yourself to do much work after class if you want to become fluent. Insist on reading, writing and listening and feel free to communicate with Native Americans. For me personally, I strongly recommend you to subscribe to some magazines, such as Fortune and Business Weekly, which improve your reading skills as well as related to your programs.

The above mentioned are my personal experience of this class and the keys in passing the class and learning English well. Wish you all good luck.

Influence by classmates

The advent of 21st century has witnessed profound changes in social, educational, technological arenas. The comparison of the influence on a child’s success between the classmates and parents has brought to popular concerns. There is a fierce controversy on the issue. People from all walks of life can hardly reach an absolute conformity. For my part, my view will identical with the former. My analysis will be well grounded by the following sound reasons.

First and foremost, no one can fail to take into account the fact that classmates virtually have common psychology and they can communicate with each other better than with their parents. Generally speaking, parents focus much attention on their children scores in China. Only under certain situations such as children getting a high score will parents be satisfied with them. Nevertheless, they will shout and punish their children rigorously. On the contrary, the classmates always consider each other in terms of friendship. They usually consider problems from their friends’ angle and will not upset or hurt their friends on account of they shared the same situations.

In addition, it is no denying the fact that the children always spend more time with their classmates than their parents which guarantees close contact with classmates. Due to the fact that they share most of their time together, they, definitely, can understand, sympathize and influence each other easier. A recent survey conducted by China Daily indicates that 72.3% Chinese students have mutual pressures, which stimulates identical understanding and tolerance. They attempt to study on basis of their teachers’ guidance and their parents’ wishes. Therefore their tasks are alike, to be good students.

To put all into one nutshell, all the evidences lead the strong support to my convincing conclusion that classmates play a significant role in the process of grow-up. Although occasionally parents have more influences than classmates, such as the children who live in remote areas where they nearly have no chance to study and contact with classmates, at most time, classmates are more important than parents in the process of success.

Poem: A View of Taishan

Poem title: A View of Taishan (Poem written 1200 years ago by Du Fu)

Background: Taishan is one of five Sacred Mountains in China. Chinese people also called it Eastern Mountain. It is located in Shandong Province and closing to East China Sea. It is the place we worship our ancestors in Chinese history. It is also a mountain surrounded with a spectacular view and has been awarded World Natural Heritage by UNESCO(United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1987.

Poet:Du Fu--a distinguished poet in Chinese history. He was lived in Tang Dynasty, about 1200 years ago, which is the Golden Age of Chinese poem development. It is one of his early works when he was failed in the Imperial Examinations. But he was still filled with ambition at that time.

Original poem:
岱宗夫如何? 齐鲁青未了。
造化钟神秀, 阴阳割昏晓。
荡胸生层云, 决眥入归鸟。
会当凌绝顶, 一览众山小。

English edition:
What shall I say of the Great Peak? --
The ancient dukedoms are everywhere green,
Inspired and vivid by the breath of creation,
With the Twin Forces balancing day and night.
I bare my breast toward clouds billowing,
I strain my sight after birds flying home.
Do reach the summit I will
Holding all spectacular attractions in a single glance

Explaination:
The first 4 sentences describe the Taishan across the regions of Qi and Lu, two famous kingdoms in Chinese history, and the different scene of mountains in the two places to indicate the lofty mountains rolling all the way up to the sky. It also implies the mountain witnesses the years of vicissitudes and the rise and fall of different dynasties.

The fifth and sixth sentences reveal the poet’s feeling when he overlooking the spectacular views. The billowing clouds stir up poet’s upsurge of emotion and the homing birds broaden his range of vision.

The last 2 sentences signify his strong willingness to climb to the top of a mountain and enjoy all marvellous scenery. It also signifies the poet’s great ambition.

I like this poem because of the awe-inspiring effect and ambitious feeling of the poem, especially reading in Chinese. It is a very famous poem in China.

Multianalysis of Internet

The advent of 21st century has witnessed profound changes in social, educational and technological arenas. Admittedly, internet is one of the greatest inventions to humankind and the world. However, we can not denying that there exists a fierce controversy over the comparison between the benefits and defects of internet. People from all walks of life can not reach an absolute conformity on the issue. As far as I concerned, my view of point will fall between the two extremes for the sake of perfection.

First and foremost, no one could fail to take into account the fact that the emergence of internet has completely varied the habits and customs of modern society. It makes the whole world become increasingly convenient and smaller. Undoubtedly, through internet, we can easily search and seek information whatever we want. By using internet, we can get to communicate with other people with ease, no matter where they live in or who they are. Moreover, the internet has promoted the freedom of speech and the freedom of information, which are the indispensable parts of a successful modern democratic society. Getting in touch with a great deal of information all over the world, one can gain advanced knowledge and latest skills, which are beneficial for the entirely life.

On the contrary, it goes without with any saying that internet also have some inevitable defects. One great thing about the negative aspect of internet is that there exists a great mount of adverse or even baleful information on the internet. Anybody with a computer can create websites and post information or pictures whatever they want to. For this reason, it is difficult to determine which one is correct and reliable and which is not. What is more, some unhealthy information will be quite hazardous to the growing up of children who are lack of ability to distinguish right from wrong.

To put all into one nutshell, we can not denying the fact what considerable progresses and contributions the internet has made for the advance and improvement of world. However, to be sure, internet exist a lot of troubles as well. To walk out these thorny problems, some effective measures must be taken without any delay. What the government should do is to enhance overall awareness of general public on distinguishing the useful information from the harmful ones and strengthen the regulation and supervision of internet to ensure the security of internet.

Foreign students--a great competitive advantage of US

The United States has the most foreign students in the world. Advanced education platform and large numbers of well-known colleges and universities attract tens of thousands of excellent students all over the world. After graduation, most students will face the choice whether working and staying in America or returning to their homelands.

President Obama, whose father was a student from Kenya, clearly know the significance of foreign students to the US. As he said, foreign students is one of the country's "greatest competitive advantages.”In fact, no one could deny what considerable progresses and contributions foreign students have made to the economic development and social prosperity of USA in the past hundred years. Carl Guardino – the CEO of Silicon Valley Leadership Group, said the prosperity of high - technology and the Internet in United States is closely related to the foreign technology talents. Therefore the H-1B is essential to the prosperity of Silicon Valley. According to a survey, 25% of American new technology and engineering companies which found in the past 10 years have at least a founder who was overseas immigrants. This proportion is much higher in Silicon Valley. 53 percent of engineers in the science and technology enterprises in Silicon Valley are from other countries. In Silicon Valley‘s start-up companies, more than half of the Chief Executive Officers are foreign high-tech professionals. Without these foreign engineers, there would be no high-tech companies crowding in the Silicon Valley. High-tech foreign people usually have a great enterprising awareness. Many of them have achieved incredible success, for instance, Yahoo Jerry Yang, Jen-Hsun Huang -- Nvidia CEO, Boolean—one founder of Google and the list will go on. They are from different countries, receiving higher education in US, working hard in Silicon Valley and then founding large businesses which having created a large number of employment opportunities and technological innovation achievements.

As a Chinese, I am very proud of so many Chinese scientists and entrepreneurs’ great achievements for the economic and social development of United States and the far-reaching contributions to the social prosperity. Taking the field of life science as an example, a large number of Chinese life scientists are active in the frontiers of this modern subject. A recent survey indicates that the proportion of Chinese authors is more than 40% in the papers published in top academic journal, such as Science, Nature and Cells. The Nobelist Dr Wiesel, who was born in Sweden and has worked in United States for more than 50 years, puts forwards the idea that there are plenty of excellent Chinese talents studying in US, many of whom have been the leaders of the scientific research field. These Chinese scientists will make a great contribution to world biological development. Bright life resulting from life science is the joint effort of the scientists from different countries.

Some experts and scholars believe that because of the economic crisis in US and the increasingly powerful and prosperous of China, more and more Chinese students will come back to their motherland after graduation. It is a big loss to the US without doubt. Obama said, "one of the great things about this country is we get the best and the brightest talent to study here.” How could he let it slip through his fingers and stand to see his country losing what is one of the greatest competitive advantages? Perhaps in the near future, the H1-B policy will be eased, immigration policy will be reformed in order to attract more foreign students. Just as a New York Times columnist said: "the world's best brains are selling off, let us buy some more."

My point of Obama's speech

On the evening of December1, President Obama made a speech about the Nation on the way forward in Afghanistan and Pakistan in the famous US Military Academy at West Point. Obama made a deep analysis of the increasingly hostile environment in Afghanistan, the more and more severe terrorism and the potential threat. He conducted a detailed explanation for the necessity and urgency of troop increase for Afghanistan and expounded the amount of extra American troops sent to Afghanistan and the expected withdrawal timeline. He also announced the core strategies in fighting against Taliban and gave a detailed response to the most popular questions from all walks of life.

Undoubtedly, it is effective and necessary to do the adjustments to Afghanistan policy and proposal a new “surge” at this moment. Obama re-emphasized the importance of taking away the tools of mass destruction and illustrated the lofty ideal that helps the people all over the world to realize the dream of freedom. He expected to further strengthen the worldwide alliance for the common interests, reaffirmed the point that the US don’t want to be the world domination and expressed a desire of withdrawal as soon as possible so that US can focus on the recovery of US economics. To be honest, Obama’s speech is trying to meet the various needs in D.C. To satisfy the requirement of more troops in Afghanistan from the Republicans as well as to make the Democrats believe that the US tiring of the war will not let troops stay too long. He is trying to pacify the leaders of NATO, Afghanistan and Pakistan with the promise that the US will not give up the war effort. In the meanwhile, he also brings pressure to bear on those leaders to keep their words.

However, just as some scholars’ predictions, Obama might face maximum trust crisis since taking office. Although I trust Obama’s policy is a necessary preparation for the final withdrawing of troops in three years, the surge may ruffle the Democratic Party, weaken the original part of his power. It will take the President who received the Nobel Peace Prize a long time to fix his public image that the creator of peace

Besides, President Obama must keep in mind the lessons of Vietnam. There are some similarities between the war in Vietnam 40years ago and Afghanistan war today. The difference is that the US’ economics strength, resources and international status are less powerful than they were once, while the participations of international affairs are more often than before. The abyssal fund demand and the uncertain schedule for leaving Afghanistan are potential risk factors. America is likely to face an uncertain situation in three years so that Obama may face a more difficult decision at that time.

In addition, I have to doubt whether US and his allies will achieve the goal of completely disrupting, dismantling, and defeating al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The facts have proven that the longer the troops of USA and his allies stay in Islamic nations, the more terrorists produced than killed. In my point of view, the Afghan government must negotiate with the Taliban and even provide appropriate placements. Even though, I still call into question the possibility of defeating Taliban. If the terrorists know that western countries be about to withdraw one day, their inner force will be prepared for that moment. That is the disquieting thing.

The decision-making process in China

In China, the government's decision system is so-called democratic centralism decision system under the socialist democracy. However, because of the old China leaves us much more feudal despotism than democratic and legal. Personal superstition, patriarchal or parents’ style national psychology and thinking mode are deep-rooted. So for quite a long time, China's political and decision-making system in real social level was still the highly centralized system.

Anyhow, in the actual social level, the main defects are bureaucratic phenomenon, power phenomenon and privilege

Since the reform and opening-up, China has carried out a series of government decision-making system reform. Take my hometown --- Hangzhou as an example. Following is the current major issues decision system.

The principles of major issues decision are: scientific, lawful, and democratic.

The contents of major issues included several aspects: for instance, discuss local regulations (draft) and review the rules, Review the national economic and social development plans, annual plan, long-term plans, government investment plans and annual financial budget plan. Review the major construction projects, especially the government investment projects, government procurement projects which worth more than 1 500 000yuan. Review major policy reforms in relation to the social security, health, science and technology, education, culture and environment protection and so on.

The decision-making process is generally classified into three stages: decision-making preparation, decision-making submitted and decision-making feedback.

(1)Decision-making preparation included suggestions, investigation and study, the scheme, evaluation, assessment and comments.
(2)Decision-making submitted stage. It included submission, preparation of material, and review of decision-making and implementation of the decision.
(3)Decision-making feedback stage. The implementary department is responsible for reporting the new questions and performance of the bill to the leading department periodically, so that the decision could be tracked.

The problems in the decision-making process
1 The information collection and processing for the decision is incomplete and distortion.

It can be said that in China, most mistakening decision-making is due to the inaccuracy and incompletion. The reasons of this phenomenon are mainly in the following aspects: the first is the way of obtaining information is not scientific, some of Chinese government officials used to using typical survey method, holding the conversazione and so on. Some officials, even release the false information for so-called achievements, all mentioned above lead to the onesidedness and distortion of information.

2 Decision schemes are always low degree of democratization.
Democratic centralism is a basic principle in the process of decision-making. However some local government decisions more emphasize on centralism than democracy. Many decisions are still decided by the leaders, which are quite common. Some decisions are taken in the form of democracy in the surface, but actually some core personal opinions play a key role, which means the vast majority of people's opinions are aside. The so-called democracy is only an adornment.

Wong Fei-hung --- My idol in Chinese history

Throughout history, some people have impressed us so much that we strongly wish to meet them. If I have a chance to meet one famous person in history, I would most desire to meet Wong Fei-hung, an outstanding Chinese martial arts leader in the end of Qing dynasty. I regard him as one of the eminent persons in Chinese history not only he acquired top Chinese kung fu but he was also a very patriotic person.

Wong was born in a rich business family in Guangdong Province in the end of 19 century. The extraordinary talent and favorable growing environment --- his mother was also a great martial arts master, contributed to his ultimate success. It is obvious that there are various martial masters in Chinese history, such as Huo Yuan-Jia, Bruce Lee. They also had great skills and ever made great contributions to the development of Chinese kung fu. However, as far as I concerned, nobody could compare with Wong. In a certain way, Wong is regarded as the founder of modern Chinese kung fu because he created several unique and crucial techniques of kung fu and passed them on to his apprentices, most of whom also became the great masters in martial arts subsequently. With his great efforts and guidance, martial arts had been increasingly popular so that many Chinese young people started practicing kung fu.

In addition, his strong patriotism also fascinates me. Throughout his life, Wong devoted all his passion and energy to struggle for the liberty of China. In the end of Qing dynasty, the government, who dreaming that China was still the most powerful nation in the world, was quite corruption and incompetent. Seclusion and complacence resulted in the invasion of many imperialism countries, including Japan. Some brutal Japanese ninjas occupied Guangdong Province and asserted that no Chinese could defeat them and Chinese were inferior. Wong, a patriotic Chinese martial arts master, could not stand the shame and finally defeat these reckless Japanese with the actual Chinese kung fu on an arena. This heart-stirring event greatly encouraged Chinese people. It enlightened Chinese people that we were comparable and even more brilliant than foreign people.

Even now, various films about Wong Fei-hung, most of which were played by Jet Li, are still very popular in China. Wong is the symbol of success, patriotism and is an example that I aspire to be. That is why Wong is my idol in Chinese history.

TV and Books, which one is more useful

The advent of 21st century has witnessed profound changes in social, educational and technological arenas. Admittedly, television is one of the greatest inventions in the recent decades. However, books, as a traditional mass media, have affected people all over the world for thousands of years. We can not ignore the fact that there exists a fierce controversy on the issue that people can learn more from watching television or reading books. People from all works of life can hardly reach an absolute conformity. As far as I concerned, my point of view will fall between the two extremes.

First and foremost, no one can fail to take into account the fact that emergence of television has completely varied the habits and customs of modern society. It makes the world more convenient and smaller. To be sure, with the development and popularity of the television, people could contact with latest and advanced information and occurrences all over the world. Through the mass media, either children or adults could seek and enjoy any program they like with ease for there appear to be a great deal channels referring to diversity areas broadcasting on the television.

On the contrary, it goes without any saying that from reading books can we absorb lots of useful and practical knowledge and skills. We are living in a world that printed matters are readily available. In library, we can learn almost everything if only we required the basic reading skills, philosophy, literature, physic science, social science and the list will go on. The person who wants to specialize in one field needs to read more books regarding this area. As a result, reading books also can learn lots of knowledge, especially in one specific region.

To put all into one nutshell, we can not denying what considerable progresses and contributions television has made for the advance and improvement of the world and humankind. Meanwhile, books, magazines and other printed matters proceed to play a dominant role not only in our daily life but also at various other aspects, such as advanced technologies researching. For these reasons, what we should do is to bring out a rational balance between them, bring their strengths into full play and diminish the drawbacks into the least extent.

Radio Boston: Transportation in Transition 11-06-2009

On June26, 2009, the Governor Patrick signs a bill to dramatically reform the transformation system. The law is widely hailed as one of the largest governmental reorganizations for it eliminates the antiquated and inefficient transportation structure in Massachusetts while saving billions of dollars for the Commonwealth. The law creates a new transportation super-agency - Mass DOT, which responsible for almost all roads, bridges and tunnels in the state.

Although some Medias criticize the merger as an administrative nightmare, I do support it for the fundamental goal of the bill: to simplify, reform and make more accountable the entire transportation system in Massachusetts. Admittedly, I am not familiar with the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, but I am always frustrated by MBTA, which means the cumbersome and inefficient transportation system. Standing in the cold wind for more than 20 minutes, late for the class and catching a cold, all of these are due to the inefficiency of MBTA. I can’t stand it any more. It’s time to reform the system right away.

However, I am a rational person. Undoubtedly, the law faces several hard and urgent tasks. First and foremost, how much on earth can be saved in future? The Senate President and Co-Chairman said efficiencies produced by the agency would save the state $6.2 billion over the next 20 years. However, Jeffrey Mullan, the new secretary of transportation, downgraded that claim. He said the number including the aligning health and welfare benefits in the RadioBoston on Nov.6. In his perspective, overall savings are likely to be $1 billion dollars over the next 20 years-- but even those savings are uncertain. James Aloisi, the Former Mass. Executive Office of Transportation Secretary, put forward the idea that the best thing of reform bill is not money saving but the great integration.

Another task worth mentioning is how to fix the great funding gap. The bill faces an estimated $15 to $19 billion funding gap in the next 20 years to maintain the current network of roads, bridges and transit for safe, reliable service. Governor Patrick settled on a gasoline tax increase on February. However, the history proves the gas tax making less value since 1991. Under these circumstances, the governor suggested to promote a “Vehicle Miles Traveled” system, which has already been tested in Oregon instead of the gas tax. Nevertheless, just as Jeffrey Mullan said, I doubt whether the system also apply to the Massachusetts. It is too far away to make a prediction.

In addition, it comes into being under a cloud of controversy over Mass DOT governing board. The bill mandates that members of this board possess transportation policy experience, transportation finance experience, and one certified engineer. Janice Loux has none. John Jenkins has none. This is a slap in the face of the legislature and one that calls for a response. Some specialists predicted the board could potentially “doom” transportation reform.

Taking into consideration all the above-mentioned factors, my point of view is explicit – only resolving the funding gap, making a clear prediction of VMT and reorganizing the governing board could the reform bill abolish the turnpike and finally help secure the commonwealth’s economic future.

Should parents make important decisions for their children?

Important decisions are those will have a significant or lasting impact on one’s life. Usually such a decision is difficult to make because the consequences are considerable and grave. For this reason, when it comes to the topic whether parents should make important decisions for their children, people have diverse ideas. Before rendering an opinion, it is essential to take a balance at the arguments on each side.

To be sure, in a sense, the parents or other relatives should take an active part in the decision-making process. They can use their experiences and knowledge to help their children to avoid costly mistakes while allow them to gain confidence and learn from their small errors so that they can make mature decisions in the future.

However, granted that the above-mentioned point of view has a few benefits, it does not mean that all the critical choices of children should be decided by their parents or other adult relatives. Since children need to live in the society and parents can not protect their children forever, children should rely on their own experiences and knowledge to grow and mature. Some people might say the children are too immature and inconsiderate to make an important decision by themselves. Undoubtedly, it is true. However, on the contrary, can anybody ensure that parents could always make exactly correct and comprehensive decisions for their children? So why not give children chances to make their own decisions? It will not only enhance their abilities of dealing with crucial matter but the experiences of failure would also lead them to understand the reality.

Furthermore, the ability of making a sound decision is an outstanding skill to a person’s life. Seldom could a child become a talent person without having his own thought. I could not imagine what a child could be whose parents make nearly all the essential choices for him.

For all the reasons mentioned above, parents and relatives do not make a decision for their children is an ideal and optimal selection and that would allow the children better prepare to stand on their own feet when they grow up.

That I believe

Preface: it is the last week’s assignment. I read the original article on the class and it’s the article that has been revised after class.

Text:
I believe lifelong learning is very important and everyone should insist on lifelong learning.

Lifelong learning means“it is never too soon or too late to learning”. And a Chinese proverb says: never too old to learn. Lifelong learning is attitudinal that one can and should be open to new ideas, decisions, skills or behaviors. Lifelong learning throws the axiom: “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” out the door.

Lifelong learning provides citizens with learning opportunities at all age and in numerous contexts: at work, at home and through leisure activities, not just through formal school education.

As for grown ups, even the aged, learning is still important as there are still some experiences and laws summed up by our predecessors for them to learn. Besides, the world keeps changing unceasingly. There is always something new for them to learn. People should never have the idea that I am old; learning isn’t a suitable thing for me any more.

Learning is not merely “to arrive at a new place” but “to travel with a different view”. Lifelong learning offers the opportunities for people to bring their knowledge up to date. It enables people to enjoy activities which they may have always wanted to do but were previously unable to. It allows them to try their hands at activities and pursuits that they had previously imagined were outside their available time or competence. It enables them to work consciously at extending their intellectual, vocational and personal horizons.

From all mentioned above, I believe the expansion of cognitive repertoire and increasing one’s skills and competencies is an undertaking that can and indeed, must – continue throughout life, as a necessary part of growth and development as a human being.

Knowledge--gained from study or being creative by practical work

The advent of 21st century has witnessed profound changes in social, educational and technological arenas. The comparison of the importance between the knowledge gained from study and the ability of being creative has been brought to popular concerns. It has to be admitted that there exists a fiercely controversy over the issue whether the success of a person depend on the academic knowledge or due to the practical skills. People from all works of life can hardly reach an absolute conformity on the issue in question. Provided that it is up to me to make an alternative, my view will fall between the extremes for the sake of perfection.

People who in favor of the former view hold their opinion based on following sound reasons. First and foremost, no one can fail to take into account the fact that knowledge gained from books has a wider range than that gained from the experience. We now live in a world that printed matters are readily available. In library, we can learn almost everything if only we have already acquired basic reading skills, philosophy, history, mathematics, literature, and the list will go on. In addition, it goes without any saying that laying a solid foundation is a top priority. The knowledge gained from study is more comprehensive that can deal with a wide variety of problems creatively or individually.

However, others preferring the latter opinion maintain a totally different argument. To start with, we live in a world with fierce competition and rapidly development. The knowledge we have learned in class is not adequate to cope with every practical problem we encounter in the reality, let alone some of them are out-dated. For instance, much of knowledge we learned in computer classes, such as the program of Visual Fox Pro, are not applied to the modern computers. As a result, it would lead to a great deal waste of time and resources. Furthermore it is no denying the fact that through the practical work we can have a clearer realization of self-value. We can gradually find a more accurate position of ourselves and eventually get a decent job.

To put all into one nutshell, all the evidences leads the strongest support to my convincing conclusion that either the knowledge gained from study or the ability of being creative is essential. What we should do is figure out a rational balance between them, bring its strengths into full play and diminish the drawbacks to the least extent.

my oponions on the skycapers

Donald J. Chiofaro, who developed International Place, is proposing building two skyscrapers with condos, offices, stores, and a hotel near the New England Aquarium. The taller builder will be 690 feet, and the shorter one 560 feet. People from all walks of life can hardly reach an absolute consensus on the issue in question. Chiofaro has faced stiff opposition from residents of the nearby Harbor Towers condominiums, who have repeatedly objected to the scale of the project. Besides, the FAA and BRA officials also offered little support for the two complexes.

After reading several articles about the colossal project, my view will fall between the two extremes for the sake of perfection. And my analysis will be well grounded with the following sound reasons.

Undoubtedly, the project has faced several vital hurdles right now. First and foremost, no one could fail to take into the account that development will overshadow the Rose Kennedy Greenway, the new city park district in the downtown. Mayor Thomas M. Menino has hired consultants to create height and design guidelines for parcels along the Greenway, which stretches from Chinatown to North Station. I’ve no idea what the final height standard is. But what I know is that without the government’s support, the project seems not to be successful.

Another point worth mentioning is that the current limit height of buildings in the area is only 155 feet based on the zoning rules. However, Chiofaro’s expectation to the building is respectively 625 feet and 560 feet, which is far beyond current standards. So He has to ask city officials to change waterfront zoning rules so as to allow Chiofaro to build such two giants.

In addition, the Massachusetts Port Authority raised concerns that the development would interfere the Logan International Airport. On Oct. 30, the FAA finding indicated Chiofaro’s project would be too tall and may interfere with planes taking off and landing at Logan International Airport and the optimal height of the complex should be 407 feet - - about half its current height. Undoubtedly, it’s a height can not be accepted by Chiofaro. However, the FFA finding indicated the development will have an adverse physical or electromagnetic interference effect upon navigable airspace – which is very hazardous.

However, we can’t ignore the benefits of the development. I do trust it will create more opportunities to the unemployed people and decrease the high unemployment rate of the city right now. Besides, this is the one site in the city that can deliver what’s needed to bring more activity to the Greenway. And just as a netizen said, Boston seems to be falling in the ranks and we need to add new bold architecture to the sky.

I am glad to hear that Chiofaro is proposing to lower the overall height of the taller building from 690 to 625 feet. But I don’t think it is enough. Considering its benefit to the city and great profit to his firm, Chiofaro should make a more concession to meet various requirements, or the vital obstacles mentioned above will be a death knell for his skyscrapers

The benefits of automobiles

Automobiles, as the exponent of the modern transportation vehicles, are an indispensable part of modern life. Over the course of past one hundred years the automobiles have gradually revolutionize the society and the lifestyle of people worldwide. Distance is no longer a hinder within people far away from each other. Granted that the automobiles also have some negative aspects, such as car and truck exhausts pollute the air in the metropolitan areas around the world and people would easier to get various illnesses. Comparatively speaking, although occasionally automobiles have a few defects, essentially its positive aspects far outweigh negative aspects. In fact, automobiles have contributions to modern life more than most of people have imagined.

One of the primary impacts is the life of modern society has been more convenient and efficient than ever before. In no period of the history of human beings had gotten such an advancement transportation that it became possible for people to travel more comfortably and conveniently to any destination near or far. The figurative world moved closer together. The modern transportation has made more goods available in local markets. For example, trucks carried cargo across the mountains and rivers to the remote area and the life quality of indigent people in remote area has improved.

At the same time, the development of modern transportation has also made the commodities in local markets less expensive. Take the mango as an illustration, two decades ago, mango was pretty expensive, and was a luxury. But the development of transportation has made it easier to transport the fresh fruits to any local markets because of the virtually decreasing freight charges. The low costs also have fascinated increasing merchants engaging in the business, which gave rise to the intensive competition as well. This trend has to some extent affected the prices. Thus, the prices of mango subsequently dropped. For the sake of automobiles, nowadays, people are able to buy any goods they want no matter where origin of the goods is.

Thank to the automobiles, the lifestyle of modern people have so great differ from our ancestors. We can enjoy our happy and high quality lives.

Massachusetts economy

Last Thursday, one inspiring piece of news attracts my attention: the US U.S. economy expanded in the third quarter after shrinking for four consecutive quarters, marking an apparent end to the worst recession since World War II. Gross domestic product expanded at a 3.5% seasonally adjusted annual rate in the quarter ended in September, which is faster than expected. This news greatly regains and improves consumer confidence as well as stimulates the whole economy environment. The Wall Street Journal showed its exciting with the headline “Economy Snaps Long Slump”. The New York Time also puts forwards the idea that the United States has emerged from the longest economics contraction since World War II.

Meanwhile, the large mainstream media didn’t over optimism. Still, with so much of the growth relying on government spending, for instance, the $787 billion stimulus package, which was passed last winter and is still being distributed, it is unclear if consumers and businesses have regained the strength to propel the economy on their own. Many economists worry that the efforts of these government initiatives will be short-lived and that the next few quarters may show sluggish growth again.

In fact, some states economy, such as Florida and Nevada, had seemed to be a faster recovery in third quarter. Unfortunately, the list doesn’t include Massachusetts. For many reasons, the Bay state economy was far weaker than the national economy, which still contracted in the third quarter. The state fell into the recession later than the downturn began nationally last year, also appears to be coming out later now.

I’ve no idea the government had taken adequate actions to facilitate the Bay state economy. In an attempt to achieve full employment and price stability (low or zero inflation) in the state, it should be the eternal objective of every government. The article states that the joblessness increases to more than 9000 in September comparing with 700 only in August. The employment rate even reached to the highest level since 1976, which is a quite scared number. In my point of view, the state government should introduce more practical policies to promote the sustained recovery in the three major industries as well as other sunrise industries. High employment rate will directly stimulate the consumer spending and investment; greatly help the economy recovery and growth.

Another point worth mentioned is government should also consider what next step to be taken after the programs expired. Those programs have favored the state economy a lot, and it is time to think about how to regain the strength to propel the economy on our own. It is a complicated but practical project. Massachusetts has a great deal of competitive industries that could be dug out more potential and create more jobs.

In all, as long as handling these problems well, I believe the article says: The state’s economy has probably hit bottom and will resume growing in the current quarter.

Sometimes, we have to do things we do not enjoy doing

We live in a world that everyone wants to be successful and everywhere is filled with drastic competition. Many people want to earn money as much as possible and enjoy luxurious and comfortable lives meanwhile need not to pay for exorbitant prices. To be sure, it is childish to think that we can be finally successful by only doing what we enjoy doing. Much time, we have to yield to the environment or situation or other occurrences in order to achieve our ultimate goals. Taking a look at around, we can easily to find too numerous examples to list to illustrate we should and must often do things that we virtually do not like at all.

The most persuasive instance is that a great deal people do their works they do not intend to even loathe year after year just on account of holding their household. A father, as the prime family member, has the principal responsibility for paying for the rent and living expenses, cultivating the children and alike. As a result, what in the career the father engage now may not the original ideal one he willing to. The reason the father do this work is only because it can afford him sufficient salary thus he would allow his family have a nice circumstance.

A more subtle idea is that many people move to a new place and have to adapt to the circumstance as soon as possible. Take study aboard as an example, many graduated students, especially those of underdeveloped countries go aboard to developing countries for further education, need to be acquainted to the entirely new circumstance surround them instantly on account of they have to deal with a large number of problems either in daily lives or in academic work. Apparently, those seemingly cruel hardships will turn out to be the best gift years later. But for today’s struggle, tomorrow glorious will not exist.

People often are amazed by the glorious appearance of a skyscraper, however at the same time they forget the fact that the spectacular building had taken a long time to construct. All the evidences above-mentioned indicate the sound view: if we want to make achievements in any aspect of our lives, sometimes doing things necessary rather than enjoyable is helpful and indispensable. In short, it is an essential element for individual success.

The drawbacks of family business

The plight of the Lewis brothers is one more negative example about the dangers of mixing business and blood. Last weekend, I went to the Legal Sea Foods restaurant located in Prudential. To be honest, I could hardly connect it with the most popular restaurant at one time. Undoubtedly, legal Sea Foods restaurant is another victim of family business.

I don’t denying the strengths of family business. For instance, some successful family businesses have competitive advantages, create great enthusiasm and passion, own high staff loyalty and lower staff turnover. Nevertheless, so many cases about disagreements over the family business leading to families’ separation and corporations’ bankruptcy warn us it’s a tough job to run a family business well.

Just imagine that live with a good friend or roommate in college, it doesn’t mean that we should get along in close quarters even we are in a good relationship. Same argument, we won’t really know whether we get along with our relatives who we can tell anything with each other during the regular time as business partners until we are actually running the business.

As far as I concerned, there are several disadvantages to the family business. One great thing is the role changing between the family and employee. It is unquestionable that each family member behaves in a particular role in the family and has been so used to it. However, in the family business, they have to change to behave in their roles exactly as they would in a traditional office setting. An employee-daughter can not be asking a CEO-dad to "take care of" this or that because she has a softball game that afternoon. Besides, it is easy to increase conflict between active and non-active siblings and other relatives if some family members can’t change their roles as soon as possible. These contradictions are likely to cause a struggle to continue the spirit of entrepreneurial flair, even force company into bankruptcy because of the poor and undisciplined management.

Another point worth mentioning is that it can be difficult to raise liquidity. For instance, some non-active senior family members may see themselves as having a job for life, directly influencing the overall work efficiency and operating mechanism. Besides, buy/sell agreements protect the company and its stock. For example, against a shareholder getting divorced and giving an ex-spouse an ownership stake, where the stock must go in case of death, what must happen to the stock in the event of a shareholder declaring personal bankruptcy. Sometimes, a shareholder just wishes to have control of his or her own investments and opts out of the family business while some outstanding non-family members may not join because they cannot reach the top.

In addition -- the risks of ownership. As a saying goes, there are not permanent friends, but permanent profits. As time goes by, business management and family members’ relations may have a subtle change. Brotherly love disintegrated into sibling rivalry due to the profits. So many recent local history of family business fallouts lend the strongest support to my convincing conclusion.

So my advice is taking the time to work out all the details before starting family business and making sure all family parties participated in business are aware of the unique risks and rewards associated with family business.

Choose major based on interests or the practical work

The advent of 21st century has witnessed profound changes in social, educational and technological arenas. The comparison of the importance between choosing the major based on interests and selecting the subject according to the practical work has been brought to popular concerns. It has to be submitted that there exists a fiercely controversy over the issue. People from all walks of life can hardly reach an absolute conformity. As far as I concerned, my point will fall between the two extremes for the sake of perfection.

People who in favor of the former view hold their opinion based on the following sound reasons. First and foremost, no one can fail to take account the fact that interests is a major motivate power whether in studying or in working. Interesting should be an indispensable part in the process of perusing further knowledge. Many Chinese parents would like to make decisions for their children for they always take it for granted that what they chose for their children is the best choice, including the university their children will attend and the major they will take. However, what is the truth? A recent survey conducted by China Daily indicates that 72.3% Chinese students, which means, the vast majority of students would insist on choosing their favorite university and major based on interests. Some of the rational students said that they would have a high efficiency and persistence in doing research and experiments in the field which they had interest in.

However, others preferring the latter maintain a totally different argument. To begin with, there is no denying the fact that the priority for getting a decent job is to having a practical major, which is more convenient than that of major based on interests. Undoubtedly, the substantive issue and ultimate goal of attending universities to accept further education is to find a decent occupation which has higher salaries and owns a stately status. They argued it was childish to think that people could eventually get a satisfied payment or a decent work only by doing what they enjoy doing.

To put all into one nutshell, all the evidences can lead the strong support to my convincing conclusion that both sides of the issue are indispensable parts of selecting an ideal subject. Nevertheless, just as an old saying goes, there is no rose without any thorns. Therefore what we should do is figure out a rational balance between them, bring its strengths into full play and diminish the weaknesses to the least extent.

Respecting difference, promoting understanding -- the crucial way in resolving conflicts

Peace, it is an ever-lasting theme for the entire world, and it is especially a tough target for the Mid East. Undoubtedly, Mid East has been the most turbulent district over the world since World WarⅡ. From the Iran-Iraq War, Gulf War to Iraq War (Second Gulf War), Israeli--Palestinian conflict, for decades, millions of innocent Jews, Muslims have become the victims of ethnical conflict. Millions of people lose their families, properties and homeland.

Recently, new contradictions broke out in the Middle East. Turkey, as a country has long been seen as an ally to Israel, has a subtle change in the relationship with the Jewish state since the beginning of this year. Prime Ministers of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President of Israel had a drastic dispute over the event that Israel's war against Islamic militants in Gaza in the World Economic Forum held in Switzerland in January, 2009. Last week, Turkey canceled a military exercise named Anatolian Eagle because Israeli pilots were to have participated in. Then a TV show that described Israeli soldiers as cruel and repressive adds to tension between Turkey and Israeli.

The source of the conflicts, without question, still is the Ethnic problem. As the complexity of the whole event, I try not to make comments without adequate knowing about the situation. In my point of view, we are in the midst of an evolving global community where it is increasing important for people to recognize our common humanity. People universally prefer health to disease, safe places to crime-riddled ones, and peace to war. In our pluralistic democracy it is crucial to find ways to unify people from diverse backgrounds. Otherwise, ethnic, religious and political factions’ conflicts will not be put an end.

Respecting difference, promoting understanding – it is the core ideology in the pursuit of peace and security of the people, although there are still tensions, misunderstandings and fractures in almost all societies. There are many districts divided by conflict, people of different faith, ethnicity and political persuasion who do not easily side by side. Most of them are a lack of knowledge and understanding.

What countries and international institutes should do is to educate people about different religious, cultures and so on. Only educating people about diversity can produce a unifying effect – by promoting understand and appreciation among people from all backgrounds.

Toward the same end of achieve a better, more peaceful world, people from different backgrounds should understand each other, and figure out a national balance between them.

The factors of Chinatown's renaissance

As a student major in finance, I surely am interested in and always focus on the global financial markets. Witnessing the successive falls of once leading and prestige financial giants in the 2008 and 2009 was a shock to me. It happened too fast. My mind reeled as soon as I read the news: a fierce global financial tsunami is barreling in.

I read a piece of news several weeks ago concerning the US’ economic recovery since fourth quarter 2008 which said by Bernanke -- Chairman of the US Federal Reserve. I also heard similar words over and over again from people all walks of life. Obviously, the majority of US people believe that this is a time for optimism about the US economy. However, my predictions are less rosy than those people. In my point of view, it is a bit premature to say the spring is coming as we can’t deny the bitter truths, namely the immense trade deficit, the crisis level of unemployment rate and the nearly zero interest rates. Actually, the future is still a long way to go; we just arrived at a crossroads, a new turning point.

However, there is no doubt that some fields and district’s rebirth is giving hope to those people bogged down in the vortex of the financial crisis. I am glad to see that Chinatown has been such a good sample. As far as I concerned, the renaissance of Chinatown could be attributed to the following four essential factors.

First is the diversified business. Different from previous scene, which was the single trade – catering industry, it is a comprehensive district consisting of many enterprises such as arts, education and culture industry. The diversity of the region attracts multicultural people. Undoubtedly, it is close to success if there is something can meet all age groups, various backgrounds and cultures.

Second – the unified management. Just as the report said, the independent businesses are more vulnerable to pressure from the recession. Thanks to the Chinatown Main Street, a nonprofit group that is responsible for the organization and management of this neighborhood, Chinatown as a whole has been running better during the recession than more exclusive districts.

Third – the reasonable rent prices, the luxury condominiums and the more convenient traffic are indisputably light spots to the investors. The Asian accounted for a large proportion in the population of Boston and many of them posses with rich assets. Under the whole world financial crisis's situation, there is no question the real estates – especially those valuable areas in Chinatown, are offering a precious opportunity for Asian investors.

Fourth – the profound metamorphosis of Chinatown’s image. Although I have been here for two months, I can imagine the bypast scene of Chinatown – gloomy and drab restaurants, beloved-if-grimy Chinese food, trash-filled streets and low quality operators. I have been to Chinatown twice lately and what I find now is the swept streets, renovated shops, various Asian cuisines and quality services. All these make me enjoyable.

From what has been discussed above, I am not surprised to see the renaissance of Chinatown and I sincerely hope that many other places in Boston be rebirth just as what Chinatown experiencing before long.

illegal download mp3

The advent of 21st century has witnessed the profound changes in cultural, social, technological, educational arenas. Admittedly, as a new kind of technology, Mp3 contribute a great convenience to modern people. However, we can’t ignore the fact that downloads songs to mp3 freely and illegal has become a serious and common issue. Although people from all walks of life completely understand that it is an immoral action, they still download tens of thousands of songs from internet every day.

Online music copyright infringement has become a worldwide problem. The data from the International Association of Record shows that, from 2001 to 2005, the world’s record revenue reduced 30%. The lower of the income is largely due to illegal Internet downloads music. This is a more outstanding question in China. At present, in China, the vast majority of music online that can be downloadable is copyright infringement. Because music online piracy is wild, it has not only brought huge losses to the copyright owners, but also destroy the legal online music downloads in the Chinese market.

How could it happen? We must split it into two aspects, the website company and the downloader.

Website companies, as merchants, always wish to earn more money and don’t care about the ethnical and moral standard. They thought the ethnical and moral standard conflicts with the interests of most people as well as companies’ interests. In order to attracting more people who like music for free and winning the so-called great reputation, website companies of course are willing to provide free download. However, they ignore an important point in commerce. In any business, unethical conducts might serve one’s interests in the short term. However, in the long run it will work against one’s effectiveness and finally lead to great harm.

On the other hand, as human being, people have two great characteristics: greedy and enjoyable. People tried all kinds of methods to close and finally meet these desires. Free songs download is a most typical example. They could download whatever they like to enjoy themselves without paying for any price. Just as merchants, Their dreams of benefit maximization come true at here.

The only way to restrain such situation is to greatly improve the regulation of online music market. Nations should take measure to speed up the enacted of law. Only under certain legal circumstance, the problem could be completely solved.

my thinking about China's 60 anniversity

Oct.1 2009, it is a brilliant and glorious day for my great motherland - the People's Republic of China. China formally kicked off its mass celebrations of New China's 60th anniversary. In the large display of military power, 14 Chinese people’s army systems and 30 weapons systems with powerful pace passed through Tiananmen Square neatly. Then, tens of various kinds of design exquisite floats followed the military display in the parade, with each of them highlighting a Chinese province’s charms or one of China’s accomplishments.

As a Chinese, I could not help exciting and tearful when I watched the great ceremony. In the meantime, there was a lively discussion among thousands of Chinese students who studying abroad on various BBS. No matter where they were, all students expressed sincere love for the motherland. As a Chinese, I feel very proud.

This great display raptly showed China’s power, civilization and modernization, which greatly changed in the past 60years. Although I lived in US now, I do love China deeply. I had my best time in China and witnessed how the country became rich and prosperous from poverty.

Some of my western friends thought I was brainwashed by Chinese government. Yes, I did, as any child in American school is educated to love his/her country and people. If you said it’s a brainwashed, yes. And I am happy being told to love my country and people, as I do love her who tried hard to give me enough food and education. Besides, I can’t ignore the fact that I grew up happily and healthily. I really appreciate my homeland.

As time goes by, more and more western people, who had ever been brainwashed by their media, have begun to recognize what a real China is far beyond their imagination by their own research. For instance, they begin to believe communist or socialism can boost the society developing and gather the money to improve the social basic utilities such as transport, education of Rural Children and medical insurance. They begin to know ethnic disturbances and riots’ atrocities in Xinjiang and Tibet, and how splittists such as Dalailam attract western media. They begin to know why Chinese people do feel happy from their heart but not from the government pressure. They begin to understand how their countries blame Chinese human right while their soldiers are killing innocent people in other countries. When they committed these crimes, were these rulers considering the human rights? Now, more and more western people are brainwashed by the truth! Their eyes of thirsting for truth help them find the truth!

Undoubtedly, many western developed countries’ governments are nice because they are mostly fair to their people. China government is kind, too! You could clearly find out how they treated their people and foreign tourists in 5.12 earthquake and how Chinese people helped each other in those tragedies.

We all live on the same earth, no matter what ethnicity we are, we should respect each other, respect other’s ethnics, culture, custom and states' internal affairs. Only under this circumstance can we establish a scientific, rational and sustainable world.

a letter to BoA

Dear Bank of America,

I am a loyal customer of Bank of America. I am very aware of the superb reputation of Bank of America and I am honored to choose Bank of America as my financial partner. As you said, I am sure that I will be treated at all times with the highest courtesy and respect, and I also expect to be provided with professional services so as to achieve my financial goals.

However, several days ago, I had an unpleasant experience in your bank. On Sep.15, I went to Bank of America which located in 775 Commonwealth Ave. I wanted to withdrawal $14500 from my China Construction Bank card and then deposit them into my BoA card for my tuition. The bank staff warmly received me and asked me whether my CCB card had an upper limit for daily withdrawal. I responded that I could not remember the upper limit but they could check it out on the banking system.

Several minutes later, when I was wondering whether CCB had a daily upper limit and whether I needed to pay for an extra fee for this transaction, the bank staff gave my CCB and BoA card back to me and told me everything is fine. I was all set! I was glad to hear that and then left.

Unfortunately, several days later, when I consumed in CVS by using my CCB card, the banking system showed that my card had been frozen! Can you imagine how embarrassed I was at that moment? I am not used to use cash. Thus, I had to put all items I bought right now back into the shelves.

When I came back home, I dialed to China Construction Bank and interrogated what had happened to my card. To my surprise, the staff of CCB responded that my upper limit for daily withdrawal is $10000 only, the extra money withdrawal by BoA was unwarranted. If I wanted to unfreeze my card, I needed to ask BoA for a certificate of pre-authorization and faxed it to CCB. Even so, because of BoA’s violation operation, my CCB card will be forbidden from withdrawal in six months. What I can do is consume only!

As a bank with a great reputation, I can’t believe BoA’s staff had made such a stupid mistake, which led to a serious consequence to your loyal consumer. I am very disappointed.

Fortunately, the staff of CCB told me that there exists a way to active my card. CCB’s headquarters in Beijing will process my requirement and permit my continuing withdrawal as long as BoA certificate the violation operation is not cardholder’s intentional conduct but an incorrect manipulation of BoA’s staff.

So could you do me a favor to fax a certification to China Construction Bank? I am looking forward to your response. It’s very important to me! Please contact me with any questions that you may have in the process. Thank you for your attention!

Sincerely,
Junhua Huang

stand with Governor's action to Hyatt

Recently, the Governor of Massachusetts threatens a boycott to a privacy company. It is very rare in the United States previously and has caused huge social repercussions immediately. We can’t ignore the fact that there exists a fierce controversy over this issue. People from different ranks of society can hardly reach an absolute consensus on this.

For my part, my view will certainly identical with the Governor’s approach: direct employees to boycott Hyatt hotels unless they make an explicit explanation for replacing the former housekeepers with $8-an-hour employees from Hospitality Staffing Solutions. And my analysis will be well grounded with the following sound reasons.

First, no one can fail to take into account the fact that government action is an important tool for responding to harmful and unethical business practices. Although it should not be the primary means of protecting employees’ legal rights, it plays an important role under certain circumstances. For instance, in Hyatt event, almost 100 housekeepers have been treated unfairly and many of them sobbed to government their experiences of cheated. The government should take measures to probe deeply into the event, protecting housekeepers’ legitimate rights and interests.

Second, the core ideology for a business should be honesty. Dishonesty and unethical behaviors will bring a business to its knees, shattering the trust of its employees and ruining its reputation with public. Hyatt’s cheating action and statement ought to be strictly punished by law. And government should help those laid-off housekeepers retrieve their legitimate rights and interests.

Third, under the current economic challenges, government should discourage some negative business behaviors such as companies fail to envision the long-term implications of their behaviors for themselves. For example, in order to cut operating costs, the Hyatt replaces nearly 100 housekeepers with lower-wage worker from a Georgia staffing firm, failing to see future implications: the reduction of social trust, the strike of employees, the government sanctions and so on.

Undoubtedly, regardless of many benefits mentioned above, we cannot lose sight of some areas requiring attention in the process. One great thing is avoiding the questioning of show of support for the housekeepers. Governor should take some practical and effectual measures to help laid-off employees immediately. Another point worth mentioning is that government should control the extent of intervene, to avoid influencing company’s daily operations.

In my point of view, the Hyatt need to make an apology to public and fired workers, thereby saving the image of the company. Due to the fact 1,400 state positions have been eliminated since last October through layoffs, attrition, and other reductions, Hyatt have obligation to rehire the staff, reducing the burden for the government.

On the other hand, the government could further investigate the actual operation situation of Hyatt and fund the enterprise as the state revenue permits, finally figure out a rational balance between government and Hyatt.

weekend business

In the weekend business, first, the host invites two economists to talk about some hot focuses in the markets and economy. Economist Jack starts by stating that the Dow-Jones Index has kept going higher since March 2009 and is closed to 10000. He puts forwards the idea that compared with last winter, the US economy has recovered a lot since many measures such as production, industrial output getting a lot of better. In the meanwhile, Economist Fraud reminds that since this recession evoked by finance crisis is much worse than 1980s, it is a long way to thoroughly overcome the finance crisis. One institution predicts a 5% GDP growing in the coming up quarter of next year. It is a distinct signal of economic recovery. Besides, talking of the gold, Jack insists that the price of gold will be come back down before long just as oil price last year which skip back from 245 to 33.

In the second section, the host broadcasts several headlines of this week. For instance, President Obama came to Wall Street to encourage investors and financial institutions. He said he would push for adoption of tough financial regulation this year and asked Wall Street executives to coordinate with this act. Another important headline is US and China trade dispute. US imposed a 35% tire tax on Chinese tire since US thought China had dumped tires in US. China meanwhile announced an entire dumping investigation into American chicken exports.

In the third part, host invites an expert to talking about the shareholder protests. She says there has been talking quite a while changing the rules regarding shareholders’ voting. Modal society requires shareholders involve exact professional management skills and know how to run a company.

In the fourth and fifth part, two professional persons talk about GM’s revive and Amazon's growth and prosperity respectively. I am most impressed by how Amazon getting large and how it is competing with those retail bookstores.

In the last section, the host broadcasts several pieces of concernful news in the coming week. For instance, the G-20 conference will be held on in Pittsburgh on Sep22, 23. The Federal Reserve Policy Committee will make another decision on the short term interest on Wednesday. They expect to keep the interest at zero and they also be issuing a statement on the financial situation and economy.

The importance of environmental protection

Environmental protection is an increasingly pressing issue all over the world. Ozone depletion, green house effect, global climate changes or global warming, etc, are the main issues in environment. Recent years, many countries and various organizations have paid more attention into environmental protection. Some pacts and protocols have been delivered. A treaty about global environmental protection will be discussed by 192 nations in Copenhagen this December although it seems unpractical to complete a new bill within three months.

About environmental issue, we could not deny it is unrealistic to expect individual nations to make, independently, the sacrifices necessary to prevent environment changes. International leadership and worldwide cooperation are essential if we expect to protect the world for the future generations.

International leadership and worldwide cooperation have made great achievements in the protection of global environment. One of the best examples is OPEC. OPEC, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, is an international organization of eleven developing countries that are heavily depended on oil revenues as their main sources of income. Since oil revenues are vital to the economics development of these nations, they aim to bring stability and harmony to the oil market by adjusting their oil output to make sure a balance between supply and demand. In the long run, this stability and harmony help to cease the problem of over-refining and over utilization of precious oil energy.

Nevertheless, we can not ignore the fact that it is difficult to reach an absolutely conformity on many other environment problems. Every country will naturally consider their national interests first. For instance, Japan is a country naturally with nearly no energy resource, so it makes great effort to conserve energy for future generations. Therefore Japan once brought crude oil from other countries and buried it under the sea, giving rise to severe regional environmental pollution.

Thus as many medias and expects’ predictions, the new bill might not get done in the Copenhagen Conference. There are some things to be completed after that. I agree with the Mr. Steven’s point, “Copenhagen is not a "now or never" chance to scale back global greenhouse gas emissions”.

In addition, I strongly suggest the powers make their positions crystal to this bill. For instance, Obama Administration should urge Senate to set up legislation about climate and energy as soon as possible so that other nations will trust U.S promises. Some fast-developing countries such as China, India should actively participate in this climate negotiation. The responsibility for preventing environmental damage should be shared by all developed, developing and even disadvantaged countries.

In conclusion, my view will certainly identical with the Levi’s advocate that every country prepares proposals about the outline of emissions reduction and funding. In the meantime, supervision by the observer group is also necessary.

Obama's lecture about the health-care reform

September 9, President Obama made a lecture about health-care reform to Congress. Past decades, almost every president has tried to call for health-care reform; however, they all met different challenges from all kinds of walks and failed. Recent years, because of the financial crisis, many middle-classes can’t get security and stable insurance on the job. Many other self-employed people can’t afford it since the insurance fee is too high to buy. In the meantime, many insurance companies deny to insurance for those people who previous illnesses or too risky to cover.

Under this situation, Obama and his group decide to begin health-care reform again. The three basic goals of this plan are: first, provide more stability and security to those who have health insurance. No Americans will worry about whether they will lose their insurances if they move, lose jobs or change their works. No institutions are permitted to change their coverage or their own doctors.

Second, provide insurance to those who don’t. Those Americans who don’t have health insurance will be able to get quality and affordable insurance since the government will create a new insurance exchange where health insurance at competitive prices. Besides, everyone who could afford this insurance is required to get insurance so that the public resources will not be wasted.

Third, it will slow the growth of health care costs for families, businesses and government. Through the reform, both private and public insurance companies will have to be self-sufficient and rely on the premium to prevent from excessive administrative costs, executive salaries and so on.

As to how to implement this plan, President Obama announced that no one dime will be added to deficits, even in the future. Most of this plan will be paid for by the savings within the existing health care system because it is full of waste and inefficiency currently. The rest of this plan will be collected from the drug and insurance companies.

In my point of view, the advantages of this plan far overweigh the defects. In the first place, those who have insurance right now will be protected by the policy. No one could arbitrarily drop employee’s coverage because of sick or else. Those people who don’t have insurance currently and can’t afford to lower-priced insurance right now will have the right and more choices to choose tax credits. All the people will have equal opportunities and all the individuals will be required to carry basic insurance. Besides, this plan will not add deficit. In fact, if slow the growth of health care costs by 0.1% a year, it will actually reduce the deficit by $4 trillion over the long term.

The only thing I worry about is that although Obama said the public insurance company won’t takeover the entire health care system, the Americans will not accept it. For Americans don’t like the mode used in British – the universal insurance by government. Nonetheless, I sill believe the health care reform is what the American people need right now.

Self introduction - Junhua Huang

My name is Junhua Huang and I come from China. I have been here for half a month. Actually, I like Boston very much, not only because of the long history of this city but also for the beautiful scenery of the harbor.

I was born in Hangzhou, a beautiful city in China and both of my parents have received the higher education. Thanks to the good environment, I have a passion for knowledge. During the four years’ studying of “Financial Engineering”, I have learnt lots of related courses such as Higher Mathematics, Probability, Linear Algebra and Investment. I do not only cultivated meticulous logical thought and strict analytical capability, but also use the mathematical model to study the basic operating law of capital market.

For the fun, I have to mention my hometown – Hangzhou. There is a famous lake named West Lake in this beautiful city. The lake has a very spectacular view with green hills as its background and with lots of tourist attractions around. One of my favorite places is a café bar right by the lake. It serves excellent coffee and it’s very quite. I am a regular there. Whenever I get free I’ll go and spend the whole afternoon there, reading a book, saying a novel. Few things are more comfortable than enjoying the leisure time in the coffee bar.

Besides, I also like to go to a park named NO.6 Park near West Lake. The park is blessed with a great view. Taking a walk in the park after dinner, enjoying the fantastic lake scenery and watching the bright moon, all of these help me relax and relieve the pressure from work and study.

In addition, I like swimming and watching NBA Games. Mentioned to strokes, I prefer to breaststroke. I don’t like swimming in the sea because it’s too salty and it contains chemical substances which are bad for healthy. Another big interest for me is watching the NBA Games. Undoubtedly, my favorite team is Dallas Mavericks. Why? Since Jason Kidd is my idol, I am his loyal fan. I like his persistence, tenacity, selfless and unity. 2001-02 and 2002-03 season, when I saw he led Nets into the NBA finals twice but failed, I cried. Presently, my only wish is the great man can win a championship ring in his brilliant career. After a summer of personnel adjustment, I do trust that the Mavericks will have a dulcet season.

It's me, a student who has great passion for studies and life. I really hope we can become good friends.
